ADDENDUM TO CANON RESETTER INSRUCTIONS

Since the CLI8/PGI5 Resetter unit was developed, Canon has revised the firmware in all current printers to make the resetting operation slightly more difficult. This has been achieved by introducing a random element to the way in which the printer accesses each cartridge. This would appear to be a reaction to the introduction of the Resetter.

In turn, this has also added a random element to the reset operation. The reset is, however, just as effective and provided you follow these simple instructions, you can still effectively reset all CLI8 and PGI5 cartridges.

1. Printers affected by the change.

The firmware revision took place around April 2007, so all printers manufactured after this date are affected. This includes iP4300, iP5300, iP6700, MP510 and MP560 although pre April 2007 models of these printers are not affected.

Printers from the previous range such as iP4200, iP5200, iP6600 and MP500 are not affected by this change and if you have one of these printers, simply follow the main instructions.

Our advice would be to use one of the previous range of printers if possible. Although they are no longer widely available, if you visit smaller IT stores or try to buy second hand you should not have too much difficulty getting one.

Alternatively, consider offering a customer a swap-out to a new machine in return for his/her old one. They get a brand new machine with a full set of OEM cartridges and you get the best printer for resetting.

2. Resetting with the new revision printers

Connect the Resetter to the printer as described in the main instructions.

It is essential that both cartridge bays have a cartridge fitted before carrying out the reset. You may wish to keep some spare cartridges for this purpose.

To begin the reset, press and release the printer’s lid switch as described in the main instructions.

As the carriage moves to the middle of the printer, the integral LED on one cartridge will light briefly before the Resetter’s Busy LED lights. Ignore this light.

Once the Busy light is extinguished, only one of the cartridges will have been reset and its integral LED will light. The LED in the other cartridge will stay out to indicate that it has not been reset this time. Exactly which of the two cartridges is reset each time is random.

Leave the cartridges in situ and repeat the reset operation. Either the same cartridge will reset again or the other one will reset. If necessary, repeat until both cartridges have been individually reset. You may then remove both cartridges. Note that once a cartridge has been reset it will stay reset, even if its integral LED does not light on subsequent cycles.

In summary, the Resetter will reset only one cartridge per cycle, and exactly which one is random. If the integral LED in any cartridge is lit after the Busy LED has been extinguished, then that cartridge has been reset during this cycle.

Our advice is to practice this a couple of times and then try the cartridges in a printer to satisfy yourself that you understand how the resetter functions in these printers.
