Lexmark C522

The Lexmark C522 is one of the keenest priced, best performing color laser printers out there. It easily performs above its weight and would work equally well as a personal or small office printer.

While far from the smallest device we have ever reviewed, it is certainly one of the best for the price. Print quality is easily as good as something three times the price, and the speed doesn’t let it down either. The C522 is a tall machine, continuing Lexmark’s habit of stacking cartridges vertically and having the paper pass them on its way up to the output tray on top. The paper tray sits on the bottom and is capable of holding 250 sheets of paper. It can be expanded to 500 if you use it a lot, but this printer is aimed at low users so the value is negligible.

So more about that print quality. Text is superb, even down to the smallest size. It is tight, dark with no jagged edges, white spots or anything else to mar the enjoyment of it. Images are printed equally well. Our test document has a selection of graphs, business images and photographs within its pages and it didn’t make the C522 stutter once. Print speed didn’t reduce even when it was printing image heavy pages. It printed text pages at 19 pages per minute and the image heavy pages at 15. That’s pretty impressive considering no laser ever seems comfortable with image heavy jobs.

Not only is the printer itself an appealing prospect for the budget conscious buyer, the consumables are too. The C522 comes with starter toners which are good for a thousand sheets or so. Replacements are $70 for a 4000 yield black, and $75 for a 3000 yield color.

Ease of use is also a positive experience with this printer. The LCD panel, while simple is easy to understand, provides information on the current print job and keeps you apprised of the status. Everything can be controlled from the desktop, so you don’t even have to go to the printer until the job is finished if you don’t want to.

Overall the C522 is a great printer for low demand users. It offers the print quality of something much more expensive, has enough features to keep everyone happy, is cheap enough to run that even new businesses should be pleased and offers enough speed to keep the most demanding users satisfied.
