HP LaserJet P1606 configuration page

The self test/device configuration page for a LaserJet P1606 (or P1606dn) includes a lot of information about the printer.  You can see the printers total page count, network settings, available memory, and serial number.

To print the self test/configuration page, hold down the Go button (the one with the green icon on it) for about five or six seconds, until the light starts blinking, then let go.  The configuration page will print out.

If you let go of the button too early, a demo page will print out instead of the configuration page.

HP Color LaserJet 2840

We tested the HP Color LaserJet 2840 when it first came out in 2005, since then we kept it on in the office as it seemed to work well. Its a monochrome multifunction with all the usual bells and whistles, but best of all, it just works.

As far as quality is concerned, the 2840 performed very well indeed. Black text was legible down to 2-point and appeared as sharp and bold as anything weve seen. Black and white graphics were impaired slightly by horizontal banding, but photos looked remarkably smooth and captured fine details well. Color text was excellent and blending was smooth overall. Color graphics looked similarly well done, especially in large blocks, and were good overall despite some crosshatching.

The fax and scan functions were equally as good. The 2840 allows you to scan or fax to and from email, do just about anything over the network and allows you to transfer documents and files to and from either paper or digital formats. It does pretty much everything a small office multifunction should do.

Being an HP device, the 2840 is a well constructed machine, well built and looks like it could last years, in fact, ours has. The after-sales support is also legendary. While we havent had cause to use it with this, we have with other machines, and not only are their technicians English speakers, they are trained and know their stuff too. While that shouldnt really be a high point of support, it unfortunately is in these times.

The software is fully featured and simple to use. There is a plethora of control functions included with them and you can pretty much control everything from the desktop if youd like.

The quality of the grayscale scan in our tests at the default settings was clean and smooth. The only complaint with the output was that its color scans were somewhat pale and lacking in detail. That can be easily remedied within the control panel though.

The LaserJet 2840 has been with us a while, and has performed admirably in that time. We have no problems recommending it to others, or to continue using it into the future. Its a great multifunction, with just the right balance of features and price to make it affordable and sensible for the small office.

HP LaserJet 4200

My uncle gave me a HP LaserJet 4200 when I was in my last year at university. He had upgraded and I was initially looking for a cheap inkjet. Initially I balked at the grey box he handed over, thinking it was way too big and would cost way too much to run. However I persevered, and I must say I’m glad I did.

I write a lot of code, so text printing is something of a hobby of mine. Looking at it on screen is fine, but there’s nothing like having it in front of you on paper to be able to read properly. I needed something that could print well at small sizes, which this printer does well. In fact that’s why my uncle suggested a laser printer, as it’s pretty much what they are designed for.

The print quality is fine, text appears crisp and clean. It doesn’t smudge anywhere on the page and it lets me print code at 4 point and I’m able to read it fine. If I have to print images, they come out quite well, although they don’t always look as good in black and white as they do in color. They are quite detailed, and the shading looks good, I just prefer color.

It doesn’t have USB, network or wireless, but an old fashioned parallel port. That’s fine because my computer has one, but I was surprised at the lack of USB, even USB 1.1.

The LaserJet 4200 is built to last. It’s solid and heavy, at 45 pounds and takes up quite a bit of space, measuring 16.4 inches wide by 16.9 inches deep by 14.4 inches high. Despite that, it works so well, I wouldn’t be without it.

It prints at around 35 pages a minute for text only pages. It does slow down quite a bit if I ask it to print images or photographs, although it gets there eventually. Fortunately I don’t need to do it that often so it’s all good.

To take the paper there is a 500 sheet tray or drawer at the bottom which slides out the front. Finished prints appear on the top, which apparently takes 250 pages. There is also a 100 page bypass tray, which I don’t use, but is there if ever I do.

The LaserJet 4200 is a great printer. It’s big, solid and takes no prisoners. It performs well and doesn’t give you any trouble. It’s easy to look after, and most importantly cheap to run. Ideal.
